Types of modeling

Fashion: These are the models meet size, age and height requirements

and are usually very skinny. They walk the runway in fashion shows

and appear in the major fashion magazines. This type of modeling

is very height and size specific meaning very few models make it

in this category. In the U.S., most of this takes place in the

major market cities of New York and LA.

Commercial: This is the largest modeling category.

Commercial models appear in ads, packaging, billboards, flyers, and

magazine articles for everything from medicine to insurance,

from work out equipment to office equipment.

This is a category where personality and the ability to show different

expressions are equally important as looks. While some are beautiful

or handsome - most successful commercial models look like everyday people.

Swimsuit: As the title says this category is shooting swimsuits.

If you are comfortable with your body this may be a category you will enjoy.

However some suits may provide less covering and

swimsuit wardrobe may be sheer or made of netting.

For this reason certain shoots may take on a glamour like style and

will require a model to be of legal age.

The model must be comfortable so communicate your limits with the photographer.

Glamour: This category is not everyone. If you are

comfortable with your body and of legal age, glamour modeling can

range anywhere from calendar girl to swimwear catalog model.

Some shots can be risque so if your not comfortable with

possible partial nudity this is not for you.

Implied nude and Artistic Nude

These categories are not for every Model.

Get to know your photographer before, as well as his/her style, use of images and compensation.

Models must be comfortable with showing their body and of legal age.

Implied nudes as the name implies is a shoot where the model although nude hides parts by way of

body position or props. Artistic nude modeling when done correctly highlights the shape, texture of the

human form through lighting. These images may be used for Fine Art figure studies or as a reference for artist work.

Am I too old?

How tall do I need to be?

Do I have to be really skinny?

There is NO age limit on modeling.

Pick up a flyer or Turn on the TV and watch some commercials

- pick up a few magazines – you’ll see there are models of

every age range and body type.

Height really is only an issue if you intend to be a Fashion model.

Fashion modeling has strict requirements for height, age and size.

In New York, most fashion models range from 5'10" to 6'.

The exceptions are the girls with the extremely unique looks.

Don't waste your time taking lots of pretty fashion pictures

for your portfolio - stick with commercial looks.

Want To Be A Model?

NOTE TO UNDER AGED MODELS:

Involve your parents!

Under aged models need the permission of their parents

to do a shoot and the parents need to be present to sign the release.

Certain types of modeling are not legal for under aged models to do.

Your parents will look out for your best interest.

If it is worth doing then do it right and get your parents involved.

Above all your safety as with any model is priority number one!

Do I really need a portfolio?

Portfolios are important, as they are not only a result of your work but also

a showcase of your personality and potential to clients.

The types of pictures in your portfolio are determined by several criteria:

1. Your age

2. Your height

3. Types of work you are trying to get

Having lots of pictures in your portfolio won't win any awards

or get you more work. It is important to have a good selection

of images that make you look absolutely terrific and sell your

personality and ability to do the type of modeling that you desire to get.
